Applying to the UK from abroad: the 15 October and 13 January deadlines

The UK has two main UCAS deadlines for 2027 entry. See which one applies to you, what happens after 13 January, and how to plan backwards from your visa.

The first UCAS deadline for 2027 entry is 6pm UK time on 15 October 2026, one week from today. Whether it concerns you depends on what you want to study. This post explains the two main dates, what the second one really means for international applicants, and how to plan backwards. All dates come from advisory and agency websites, not from UCAS itself, so check the UCAS calendar and your university's own pages before you rely on them.

Which deadline is yours

According to several advisory sites, the 15 October deadline applies to:

Almost everything else follows the second deadline, 6pm UK time on 13 January 2027. That includes law at most universities. Individual universities and courses vary, and some art and design courses and conservatoires run on different timelines, so read the page of each course you are considering.

There are two rules to know. You can apply to Oxford or Cambridge in one cycle, not both. And late applications are not accepted for the 15 October courses. Students News says that if you miss the date for medicine or Oxbridge, you would normally have to apply for 2028 entry.

Time zones matter. Both deadlines are at 6pm in the UK, not midnight. Convert that to your local time, and ask your school if it sets an earlier internal date for the reference. Many schools do, often in November or December for the January deadline, and earlier for October.

What the 15 October deadline involves

Submitting UCAS is only part of the work. According to Tutorful and ReachIvy, several course-specific steps sit around the same date. Admissions tests such as the UCAT are registered for and sat in summer 2026. Medicine applications need work experience and referee statements in place early. Competition is high: ReachIvy reports that Oxford received more than 23,000 applications for around 3,300 places in a recent cycle.

If you apply under the early deadline, your whole application goes in at once. Students News points out that this includes your other choices, so your personal statement and reference need to be ready. UCAS opened submissions for 2027 entry on 1 September 2026. Secondary sources say the fee is £34.50 and that the personal statement now has three questions within a 4,000-character limit. Verify both in your UCAS account.

What 13 January really means

The 13 January date is called the equal consideration deadline. According to Global Pathways, every application received by then must get equal consideration. Applying in October or in the first week of January makes no difference to most courses, and this is not a closing date.

From 14 January to 30 June 2027, UCAS still forwards applications, but universities consider them only if places remain. Global Pathways adds that international places rarely fill early, and that applying in March or April for a September start is routine. It names exceptions: medicine and allied health, capped courses, and popular computing and business courses at high-ranking universities. For those, treat 13 January as the real deadline.

Some later dates in the same calendar:

  • UCAS Extra opens 25 February 2027.
  • 30 June 2027 at 6pm is the last day to apply with named choices.
  • Clearing opens in early July 2027.
  • 23 September 2027 is the final date for any 2027 entry application.

The page notes that dates can shift by a day or two.

The constraints that come later

For international applicants, the UCAS date is rarely the hardest one. SmartJamb says there is no separate international deadline and no extended one. What differs is what follows an offer. Global Pathways gives these typical figures, which are not official:

  • A deposit of £2,000 to £5,000, usually refundable only if the visa is refused.
  • A CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) issued no earlier than about six months before the course starts.
  • Funds held in an eligible account for 28 consecutive days.
  • A student visa decision about three weeks after biometrics.

SmartJamb adds that for many applicants the CAS comes after an offer becomes unconditional, which is often after exam results. Check with each university when yours will be issued.

A backwards plan

Work from the date you want to arrive, and check each step with your chosen universities.

  1. September 2027: course starts. Your visa should be decided before you travel.
  2. Summer 2027: exam results, CAS, visa application. Your bank account needs 28 days of funds before you apply.
  3. Spring 2027: reply to offers and pay the deposit if the university asks for one.
  4. By 13 January 2027: submit if your courses follow the main date. Treat it as firm for competitive courses.
  5. Now to 15 October 2026: if you are applying to Oxford, Cambridge, medicine, dentistry or veterinary courses, finish the statement, reference and any test requirements.

A question for the weeks before January: do you already know what you want to study? UCAS lets you apply to up to five courses, and for most courses you have until January, or even June, to decide. If the choice is still open, the whatshouldistudy questionnaire compares your interests with 80 fields of study and lists matching degree programmes. Use it before you spend time on a personal statement for a subject you may not want.
